(informal) Biography sketch

I was born in London (UK).

In the 70s my parents moved to one of the most beautiful paradises in the world: the Bahamas! My father was a croupier at El Casino. I lived in Freeport for 12 years, playing, swimming, eating conch fish.

In the 80s I moved to Italy where I met my wonderful wife and, after we got married, the two little jewels of my life: Simone and Chiara!

Before that, I obtained a high school diploma in Computer Science in 1985 and then enrolled to the University of Calabria (Italy) where I obtained a Laurea degree "Summa cum Laude" in Applied Mathematics.

Since I graduated, I am working with the Empedocles Research Group. We mainly deal with parallel computing and modeling and simulation of complex natural phenomena, like lava flows, debris flows, traffic simulation and bioremediation of contaminated soils, basically using parallel computing models like Cellular Automata and Genetic Algorithms (you can find more in my publications page). I am currently implementing these models on parallel computers (using GPGPU, MPI and shared memory paradigms).

I am currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Calabria and member of the HPCC (High Performance Computing Centre) at the same University.

Of course, not everybody in the family is interested in complex systems! Take a look at what my cousin Eugene Spataro can do right here!
