In 1980 he joined CRAI, a research and application centre in Computer Science, where he headed the research division.

From 1992 to 1994 he was an associate professor, and since 1994 he holds a position of full professor in Computer Science.

He headed the Department of Mathematics of the University of Calabria from 1999 to 2002. Currently, he is chair of the Computer Science degree course.

In 1998 he has served as a visiting researcher at the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) in Berkeley.

He has worked on database design for many years and his current interests are in the area of Knowledge Management, mainly in data/text mining and knowledge representation and reasoning.

He has participated to several projects sponsored by the European Union and the Italian Research Council. He is the team leader of several industrial research projects in the area of Knowledge Management.

He is the CEO of Exeura, a research spin-off from University of Calabria
